Qualcomm introduced two new flagship mobile platforms in its September 22, 2026 Snapdragon Summit press release. Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 are manufactured on a 2-nanometer process and designed for on-device agentic AI experiences. Qualcomm Senior Vice President of Mobile Devices Chris Patrick said that releasing not one but two flagship platforms gives device manufacturers more options.
Two models, the same production line
The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is also manufactured on the same 2 nm process as the Extreme version; it also has a custom Oryon CPU, redesigned Adreno GPU, and Hexagon NPU. According to Qualcomm, the Extreme’s Oryon CPU is the first mobile CPU to reach 5 GHz: two prime cores run at up to 5.0 GHz, six performance cores at up to 4.0 GHz, with 16 MB Oryon Flex Cache behind them. The platform supports LPDDR5x/6 memory up to 5300 MHz and densities up to 24 GB; on the storage side, UFS 5.0 is used.
Difference between versions and performance gains
Qualcomm compares its measurements with the previous generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. For the Extreme version, it reports 13% faster CPU, 37% better CPU power efficiency, 44% higher GPU performance, 40% better GPU efficiency, 35% faster NPU, and up to 33% better AI performance per watt. For the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, 10% CPU increase, 35% GPU increase, 14% NPU increase, and up to 20% better AI performance per watt in multi-step agent workloads stand out.
Qualcomm also notes that comparison results may vary depending on the device manufacturer’s implementation and other factors.
How the on-device agent experience works
A new Element Accelerator consisting of 12 scalar, eight vector, one tensor, and one element core has been added to the redesigned Hexagon NPU. Shared memory has grown by 50%, and precisions from INT2 to FP16 are supported. The improved Sensing Hub combines a dual-core AI processor, dual micro NPUs, and dual always-sensing cameras to run the Qualcomm Personal Scribe feature; Qualcomm reports up to 85% performance increase here. In the standard model, agent support that works without waiting for commands stands out: the system learns user preferences on-device through the Sensing Hub, Hexagon NPU, and Oryon CPU and coordinates tasks across apps on its own.
Gaming, camera, and connectivity
Adreno Neural Fusion uses AI matrix cores in the GPU for super resolution, frame generation, and image reconstruction; 18 MB Adreno High-Performance Memory brings 12% more power savings. According to Qualcomm, the platform enables the first commercial devices to record 8K video at 60 fps and 4K at 240 fps; triple 64 MP camera support is also described as a first. The image processor uses three 20-bit AI ISPs and goes up to 320 MP in photos.
On connectivity, the X105 5G modem offers 14.8 Gbps download and 4.2 Gbps upload speeds. Qualcomm describes it as the first system ready for 3GPP Release 19; NR-NTN satellite support for voice calls, video, and data, and NB-NTN support for messaging are coming. FastConnect 8800 reaches 11.6 Gbps and, alongside Wi-Fi 8, Bluetooth 6.0, Ultra Wideband, and Thread support, also offers a 4×4 Wi-Fi configuration for the first time.
Which phones will feature it
Qualcomm says flagship phones using the two platforms will be released by HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo, and Xiaomi. Common features include Lumen global illumination real-time hardware-accelerated ray tracing, C2PA-based AI provenance data support, Quick Charge 5, and USB 3.1 Gen 2 over USB-C. The Extreme version is listed under part number SM8975, while the standard version is listed under SM8950.
