The open-source terminal coding agent OpenCode has made the DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and Zhipu AI’s GLM-5.3 Flash models available for free access without requiring an API key or credit top-up. The move has become one of the most concrete alternatives to AI coding subscriptions that have climbed into the $20 to $200 per month range.
OpenCode is already an autonomous agent that can interact with the file system from the terminal. What has changed in this new step is not the agent itself, but that the models behind it can now be used without platform credits being deducted.
Two models, two different workloads
Thanks to its asymmetric MoE architecture and FP4 KV cache optimization, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash generates about 140 tokens per second. Its 200,000-token context window makes it possible to load the entire source code of a medium-sized project into memory in a single prompt. In this respect, the model is efficient for rapid implementation tasks such as boilerplate code, CRUD operations, and function completion.
GLM-5.3 Flash, on the other hand, stands out in multi-step causality tests, refactoring, and code review. The two models can also be used together. It is possible to have GLM-5.3 plan an architectural decision or a complex database migration first, then leave code generation to DeepSeek V4.1 Flash.
Installation comes down to two commands
On any system with Node.js installed, on macOS, Linux, or Windows WSL, the tool is installed with the npm install -g opencode-ai@latest command and started by typing opencode in the terminal. In the interface that opens, the /models command brings up the provider list. When deepseek-v4.1-flash-free is selected from the list, the model begins responding from OpenCode’s high-speed server pool. You can switch models mid-session by typing /model glm-5.3-flash.
No cloud configuration, credit card verification, or separate API account is required. Access is limited by light rate protection rather than a strict usage quota.
The cost barrier is coming down
As coding agents have moved to the terminal, cost had become the biggest barrier for independent developers and students. $20 monthly subscriptions are a noticeable expense item in Turkey due to exchange rates. OpenCode’s free model pair removes this threshold for developers in the prototyping and learning stages.
Still, there is no guarantee that free access will be permanent. Model providers’ quotas and rate limits may change over time. Teams working in production environments need to have backup providers.
