Google has added file editing to the Gemini app. Now a PDF, presentation, spreadsheet, Markdown, or code file created during a chat can be edited on the same screen without switching to another app. The company announced the development on the Gemini App blog on October 29, 2026. The feature is available in all languages where the Gemini app is available and for all users; the announcement did not specify a phased rollout schedule.
Editing without leaving the chat
Previously, users would create a file in Gemini, download it, and switch to another program to fix it. In the new version, the file opens inside the chat, can be made full screen, and can be edited directly by typing. Google’s announcement mentions three separate methods: making the file full screen and typing manually, selecting text inside the file and asking a question about that section, and asking Gemini to improve the file’s content.
In the company’s example, the user uploads handwritten class notes and asks Gemini to prepare a study guide in PDF format from those notes. After the guide is created, the user can manually edit the text, select specific sections and ask Gemini to change the text or images in that part, and ask follow-up questions in the same session. Google describes this workflow as a single uninterrupted session instead of switching between tools.
Only PDFs can be edited on mobile
Format support is split by platform. PDF preview and editing work in both the web and mobile apps. Google Docs, Google Sheets, presentation files, Markdown, TXT, and code files can only be edited in the web version. This means you can work on a PDF on your phone, but to edit a spreadsheet you need to open the app in a browser.
Added on top of April’s file generation
Google first announced the file generation feature on April 29, 2026. In that version, Gemini could create PDF, Word, Excel, Docs, Sheets, and Slides files from a given prompt; the user would download the file to the device or transfer it to Drive. Supported formats included .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, .csv, LaTeX, plain text, rich text, and Markdown. The editing step was done outside the app at the time; the October update brings that layer directly into the chat.
In practice, this shortens the draft, download, fix, re-upload loop. For people preparing documents, editing class notes, or quickly polishing a short report, Gemini is no longer just a text-generation tool; it is becoming the place where you finalize the file. Still, it is worth remembering that the final check on critical documents rests with the user; the app speeds up formatting, but does not guarantee the accuracy of the content.
