The Number of Ransomware Groups Has Increased by 40 Percent!

2024 Cyber Attack Alarm: Ransomware Attacks Increased by 11 Percent!

The alarm bells are ringing for the cybersecurity world! 2024 went down in the records with a striking increase in ransomware attacks. Globally, exactly 5,414 ransomware attacks were detected. This figure represents an 11 percent increase compared to 2023.

The Second Half of the Year Was a Total Cyber Nightmare!

Cyber attacks got off to a quiet start to the year, gaining momentum especially in the second quarter (Q2). But the real big surge happened in the fourth quarter (Q4). In this period alone, 1,827 attacks took place. This accounts for 33 percent of all attacks throughout the year!

The Collapse of Giants Like LockBit Led to the Birth of New Cyber Gangs

Successful law enforcement operations against major ransomware groups led to a significant change in the cybercrime world. In particular, the takedown of groups such as LockBit, one of the leading names in the sector, created a gap in the market. This paved the way for the emergence of smaller and more competitive new gangs.

Who Is LockBit? LockBit is a cybercrime organization that operates on the ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) model, targets many organizations worldwide, and has frequently made headlines in recent years.

Number of Ransomware Groups Increased by 40 Percent!

The number of active ransomware groups, which was 68 in 2023, rose by 40 percent to 95 in 2024. This shows that the ransomware threat is becoming increasingly complex and widespread.

So What Should We Do? How Can We Protect Ourselves from Cyber Attacks?

This increase in ransomware attacks clearly shows that individuals and organizations need to review their cybersecurity measures. Remember, being aware and taking the right precautions is the most effective way to protect against cyber attacks.

To improve your cybersecurity, you can consider the following steps:

  • Use strong and unique passwords.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA).
  • Keep your software and operating systems up to date.
  • Do not click on suspicious emails and links.
  • Back up your data regularly.
  • Use reliable antivirus software.
  • Participate in cybersecurity awareness training.

Remember, cybersecurity is not just a product, but an ongoing process.
