Anthropic has allocated 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund

Anthropic has committed 5% of its shares to the newly established Public Benefit Fund. As the company grows, the fund's share will also increase; in total, about 20% of the shares will be set aside for the public benefit.

In its October 18, 2026 announcement, Anthropic said it would allocate a portion of its shares to the newly established Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. According to the company, the fund is designed so that its stake grows automatically as the company grows. Subject to shareholder approval, 5% of the company’s shares will be committed to the fund. Above a specified threshold, for every 50% increase in the company’s valuation, an additional 2% may be added at the board’s discretion.

How the fund will work

Anthropic is establishing the fund as a wholly owned LLC rather than a 501(c)(3) foundation. The company says this structure provides flexibility across different forms of giving. Under the disclosed terms, none of the Anthropic shares held by the LLC will be used for lobbying or political donations, inside or outside the United States. Thanks to the fund’s flexibility and scale, it can make large grants to traditional nonprofits and also direct resources to specific communities.

Mission work inside the company and prior commitments

Anthropic is structured as a public benefit corporation. According to the company, much of its mission-focused work still happens inside the company. AI safety and interpretability research, applied biomedical work, and discounted Claude access for nonprofits and scientific institutions are among them. The company says it keeps these activities directly in-house because they carry both public benefit and commercial value.

The new fund builds on earlier share commitments made by founding partners and employees. At the founding stage, partners committed to donating 80% of their shares. The company also runs a program that matches shares donated by employees, and about half of employees participate. With the new commitment, roughly 20% of Anthropic shares will be set aside for the public benefit. The company notes that this percentage could rise further if certain valuation thresholds are crossed.

Workforce impact and $200 million research fund

Anthropic points to impacts on the labor market as one of the areas the fund could address. According to the company, AI can create enormous economic value, but it can also create instability for many workers. The company has already earmarked $200 million for this issue. That funding goes to the Anthropic Economic Futures Research Fund, whose research agenda was published on July 22, 2026.

The fund will primarily support projects between $5 million and $30 million, with upward flexibility for well-defined, high-impact projects. Projects under $1 million will not be funded directly. Applications are accepted from accredited universities, independent research institutes, policy research organizations, and nonprofits with large-scale field experience. Individual researchers can participate as principal investigators on an institution’s project, but personal applications are not considered. The fund’s scope is global, although the disclosed funding guidelines are primarily US-focused.

Anthropic said it will share details about the fund’s structure and governance in the coming months, and will also announce the valuation thresholds that could bring additional shares to the fund at that time. The company will also publish its progress on its mission to date in a public benefit report.
