DeepSeek released a rival agent to Claude Code

DeepSeek has open-sourced its autonomous coding prototype that watches repositories and chat channels and leaves ready-to-merge pull requests without waiting for a developer to enter a command.

China-based DeepSeek has open-sourced the autonomous software engineering prototype it developed as an alternative to coding agents that wait for line-by-line commands in the terminal. Prepared by the company’s Harness team and published on GitHub under the name dsh-superagent-prototype, the project is distributed under the MIT license and is positioned as a direct competitor to Anthropic’s Claude Code tool. The team’s summary of the project is short: “minimum human attention, maximum value”.

Until now, tools like Cursor, GitHub Copilot Workspace, and Claude Code have largely relied on the developer’s active commands and direct supervision. The developer entered instructions into the terminal at every step, copied error logs, and reviewed the agent’s suggestions line by line. DeepSeek’s prototype tries to reverse that relationship.

From terminal agents to background agents

Super-Agent does not wait for the developer to enter commands. It listens in the background to GitHub repositories, open issue trackers, and team chat channels; Feishu, Slack, and Discord integrations are included in this monitoring pipeline. When a technical discussion such as “we’re getting a timeout error on this API call” comes up in a team channel, the agent extracts the context and quietly starts a debugging session.

Then, without interrupting the developer’s work, it opens independent branches, runs tests, and leaves the patch it has prepared in front of the developer as a pull request ready for review. In other words, the agent’s output is not a chat reply, but a code change that lands directly in the repository.

How the Router-Worker architecture works

According to the technical documentation published by DeepSeek’s engineers, the system is built on a two-layer hierarchy. The upper-layer Router is a reasoning engine that filters signals from the development environment, git commit history, and chat messages. It assesses the complexity of the incoming task, maps which files will be affected, and breaks the work into independent subparts.

The lower-layer Worker sessions run in parallel in isolated (sandboxed) environments. While one worker writes unit tests, another can update the database schema, and a third can synchronize documentation. The code blocks produced by the workers are collected in a central web panel. Ambiguities the agent cannot resolve on its own, such as a critical business rule decision, appear in the panel as a question card for the human engineer to approve with one click. Routine refactoring and test writing are completed fully autonomously.

The cost and open-source trump card

Because Claude Code runs on Claude models with strong reasoning capabilities, it can generate serious token costs in intensive enterprise projects; sessions left open in the terminal for hours can turn into hundreds of dollars in API spending. DeepSeek, on the other hand, pairs Super-Agent with its own cheap inference API: according to the source text, the price ranges from $0.14 to $0.55 per million tokens.

The company’s Multi-head Latent Attention (MLA) architecture also aims to reduce hardware costs while keeping repositories with thousands of lines in memory. Thanks to the open-source license, organizations can set up similar agent installations on their own servers without moving their codebases to third-party clouds.

A new balance in coding agents

The prototype is still an experimental project; how reliable it is in production has not been measured by independent tests. Still, the direction is clear: in AI-assisted coding, the debate is shifting from “which model generates better completions” to “which job the agent can finish independently of a human.” DeepSeek’s move brings the open-source and low-cost trump cards to the table in this race.
